ABSTRACT
This study, titled “Evaluating Research Competence Among Senior High School Research Teachers: Insights from Students of Balayan Senior High School,” examined students’ perceptions of their teachers’ competence in teaching research. A total of 233 Grade 12 students who had completed Practical Research 1 and 2 served as respondents. Data were gathered using a structured 4 point Likert scale questionnaire, and results were analyzed through weighted means and averages to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Findings revealed that teachers received high ratings in their ability to explain complex concepts (M = 3.61) and provide consistent support throughout the research process (M = 3.60). However, students identified the need for improvement in areas such as research design, data gathering, and methodological application, which are critical to developing research competence.
To address these gaps, the study recommends the integration of peer teaching, collaborative group projects, and digital simulations to enhance engagement and deepen understanding. Furthermore, strengthening instruction in research methodology, ethical considerations, and data analysis will foster greater independence and confidence among learners. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of continuous professional development for research teachers and provide actionable strategies to improve research instruction, student competence, and academic outcomes in senior high school.
