ABSTRACT

The Philippines is recognized as the nation with the largest English-speaking population in the world, with a significant portion of its residents speaking the language fluently. The majority of individuals concur that learning English is among the most difficult languages. Its complex grammar and inconsistent spelling make it challenging for both learners and native speakers. The researcher conducted a survey among thirty (30) college students currently taking Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English, at Dr. Francisco L. Calingasan Memorial Colleges Foundation Inc., to identify the correlation of the factors that affect the students’ ability to learn the English language, namely motivation, teaching strategies, learning environment, and socioeconomic factors; and the challenges in teaching and learning the English language. The researcher used the correlational research design, with questionnaires as the main form of data gathering instrument. The researcher found out that motivation had a significant relationship with the challenges in teaching and learning the English language, wherein respondents agreed that motivation is a key factor that affected English language learning, with a weighted mean of 2.72 (SD= 0.798) and a p-value of 0.027 which is less than 0.05 level of significance. On the other hand, the other factors had no significant relationship with the challenges in teaching and learning the English language with p-values higher than 0.05 level of significance. Learning activities were crafted to augment the teaching and learning of the English language. The activities were carefully crafted to suit the needs of students and provide a challenging and engaging way of learning the English language.
