· Volume II Issue I

Science, Technology and Engineering Curriculum among Junior High School students are one of the special curriculum programs offered by the Department of Education in different public schools. The curricula aims to produce and develop learners with high interest in the field of Science. These learners are the future researchers and scientists. In this modern world that is surrounded by many scientific information, this curriculum is relevantly fitted to these young learners who are future researchers of this country.

Studying research equips the students with the knowledge and skills of conducting researches in Science and in preparing for scientific communications that may serve as an avenue for higher level of competence in research which applies to rapid changes of the modern world. In order to acquire mastery and competence of scientific writing skill, students (Grade 10 learners) are exposed to the rudiments of thorough observations, conducting investigations/researches, collecting data, hands-on learning, writing research reports, and also preparing them for a competition.

But their experience in research are not become substantial/relevant if no one able to share their ideas and knowledge in conducting a research.

One of the best practices conducted among Grade 10 STE learners is peer tutoring in research (ATE AT KUYA KO, RESEARCH PARTNER KO). Researchers from Grade 10 STE work collaboratively with other learners (GRADE 7-9 STE) which serves as partners in gaining knowledge about research. They share knowledge, research skills and experiences to further develop their ability to conduct research. They also serve as consultants to develop and enhance their research studies. The main objective of peer tutoring on research is to transfer abilities appropriate to Science discipline, directly help other learners to cope up with research to meet curriculum competencies and develop camaraderie among learners.

According to Arrand, et.al (2019) study confirms that peer tutors show enhanced or increased personal development, motivation and confidence among learners. It was also revealed that they can find interpersonal skills and empowering others that gives them a greater sense of individuality. Student researchers as a helper of their co-learners, they provide substantial role in sculpting the mind of young researchers and prepares them for future researches.

A student researcher dedicated his/her time and effort on research, they follow steps before they enhance their capabilities. They undergone trainings and consultations with the experts which seeks professional assistance from a wizard in the field of research, critiquing to further enhance and defend their study.

Through their research discoveries they can express and show that Science plays relevant role in our modern society. Proven to this was the successful outcome of their research studies, wherein, STE produces many graduates which are now professionals that most of them gives an excellent performance in terms of scientific studies. It was then proven that it boosts the potentials of learners in the scientific world. Today, different schools still offer STE program and continuously produces a well-rounded learner.

Batomalaque (2009) justifies that it is needed to achieve a degree of “scientific literacy” where everyone achieves higher learning and can be the contributor of modern societies. Research partner as a best practices emphasize the camaraderie and helping one another for both young researchers. Creating an environment of helping one another, fosters group work, team spirit and socialization are strategies to attain a common goal. Best of all no one left behind in research where everyone becomes benefitted and also becomes the 21st Century Skilled learners.
