ABSTRACT

The arrival of the Digital Age has made rapid advancements in how information and knowledge passed around. This has especially been made easier due to the advent of cell phones / mobile phones. With a massive paradigm shift for the 20th century, education has both been made easier yet also difficult at the same time. While these technologies have made the gathering of information easier, it has brought a side effect where students are now becoming more distracted while inside of class thanks to these cell phones. Giving trouble for the many teachers who must take into account these technologies.

The researcher conducted a survey among thirty (31) college students currently taking Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English, at Dr. Francisco L. Calingasan Memorial Colleges Foundation Inc., to identify how the students can use cellphones as a tool in learning English, specifically on how they use their cellphones, how they browse the internet, how they communicate through the internet and how they use social media. The researcher used the correlational research design, with questionnaires as the main form of data gathering instrument. The researcher found that when profile was considered the majority of the respondents belong to the age range of 18 – 20, with a little over a half were male. The respondents also agreed on their perception on the usage of cellphones as a tool in learning English with all of the scores show a point value range between 2.5 – 3.49 showing that a majority of them agree on the usage of cellphones in the classroom. It also showed that there was a significant difference in the perception on the usage of cellphones as a tool in learning English when profile was considered with two of the items showing a difference when sex was considered, while one of them when age was considered.
