ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of manipulative-based and real-life counting experiences in strengthening the early numeracy sense of kindergarten learners in Danao Elementary School. The findings of the study served as the basis for the proposed enhancement plan aimed at improving early numeracy skills among young learners.
This study utilized a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design to determine the effectiveness of manipulative-based and real-life counting experiences in strengthening the early numeracy sense of kindergarten learners. The design allowed the researcher to measure the learners’ numeracy performance before and after the intervention and evaluate the impact of hands-on, concrete learning experiences. A single group of kindergarten learners participated in the study, and their pretest scores provided baseline data regarding their initial numeracy abilities. Following the pretest, the learners were exposed to structured manipulative-based activities and real-life counting exercises designed to develop number sense, counting skills, and early mathematical reasoning.
Data collection began with securing permission from the school administration, including the school head, to ensure that the study was conducted in accordance with school policies and ethical guidelines. After approval was obtained, as the researcher and kindergarten teacher, I administered a pretest to assess the learners’ existing numeracy skills. During the intervention, the learners engaged in manipulative-based activities, such as counting objects, sorting, and arranging materials, as well as real-life counting experiences, including counting classroom items or snacks. The researcher observed classroom interactions, monitored participation, and recorded learner performance using a structured observation checklist.
Following the intervention period, a posttest was administered using the same instrument as the pretest to measure changes in the learners’ numeracy skills. All collected data were tallied, tabulated, and statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test to determine the significance of the intervention. This procedure ensured that both quantitative outcomes and qualitative observations were used to assess the effectiveness of manipulative-based and real-life counting experiences in strengthening the early numeracy skills of kindergarten learners.

It compares the learners’ performance before and after the intervention and presents the statistical basis for determining whether the observed improvement in early numeracy skills was significant.
The results reveal that the learners performed considerably better in the post-test than in the pre-test. This improvement indicates that the kindergarten learners developed stronger early numeracy skills after participating in manipulative-based and real-life counting experiences. The findings suggest that the intervention effectively enhanced counting ability, number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, and basic mathematical reasoning through meaningful and concrete learning activities.
Furthermore, the statistical analysis showed that the computed value exceeded the critical value and that the probability value was lower than the established level of significance. Consequently, the null hypothesis was rejected, leading to the conclusion that there was a significant difference between the learners’ pre-test and post-test performance. This evidence confirms that the improvement in early numeracy skills was not merely due to chance but was associated with the implementation of the intervention.
The results imply that manipulative-based and real-life counting experiences had a statistically significant and positive effect on the early numeracy skills of kindergarten learners. The higher post-test performance, supported by the statistical findings, indicates that the intervention effectively strengthened counting skills, number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, and early mathematical reasoning. These findings further demonstrate that hands-on manipulatives and authentic counting experiences promote meaningful learning and enhance foundational numeracy development.

INTRODUCTION
Early numeracy is a foundational skill that significantly influences children’s future mathematical understanding. Strengthening numeracy sense through manipulative-based and real-life counting experiences provides young learners with opportunities to connect abstract concepts with tangible experiences. Kindergarten learners benefit most when they can touch, move, and explore objects around them, such as blocks, sticks, beads, bottle caps, and toys. These hands-on approaches transform mathematics from something abstract into something enjoyable and understandable. Furthermore, real-life counting experiences—like counting fingers, toys, or classroom materials—help children relate numbers to everyday contexts, enhancing their understanding of mathematics as a practical tool rather than just a set of memorized facts. Integrating manipulative-based activities supports diverse learning styles, enabling visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners to engage actively in the learning process. By combining manipulatives with real-life counting experiences, children not only strengthen their numeracy skills but also develop problem-solving abilities, social interaction, and communication skills, creating a holistic learning environment.
Clements and Sarama (2017) found that engaging young children with concrete manipulatives, such as blocks and counters, enhances their understanding of number sense, counting, and arithmetic operations. Manipulative-based activities allow learners to visualize numerical relationships, leading to improved problem-solving abilities and greater confidence in mathematics. Similarly, Fisher, Hirsh-Pasek, Golinkoff, Singer, and Berk (2016) demonstrated that hands-on, play-centered experiences promote higher engagement and deeper learning in early mathematics, as children actively construct knowledge through exploration. These studies highlight that combining manipulative with authentic counting tasks makes mathematics meaningful, motivating, and accessible for diverse learners, aligning well with developmentally appropriate practices in kindergarten education.
From the researcher’s perspective, strengthening early numeracy through manipulative-based and real-life counting experiences is critical because it addresses both cognitive and social aspects of learning. As an educator, the researcher has observed that students learn best when they can engage with materials and interact collaboratively in structured activities. Lessons that incorporate manipulatives and real-life tasks create an inclusive and supportive learning environment, fostering confidence and interest in mathematics. This approach also allows teachers to provide immediate feedback, adjust instruction to learners’ needs, and track progress effectively. Personally, the researcher is motivated to investigate this topic to provide empirical evidence on how interactive numeracy activities impact learning outcomes and to inform strategies for effective kindergarten instruction.
Limited availability of instructional materials, such as counting blocks, flashcards, and educational toys, restricts teachers’ ability to provide hands-on experiences. Attention span variability among kindergarten learners poses difficulties in sustaining engagement during activities, while diverse learning paces require careful differentiation. Additionally, lack of parental involvement and support can limit reinforcement at home, reducing the effectiveness of real-life counting experiences. Teachers also face time constraints and workload pressures, including lesson preparation, curriculum requirements, and assessment demands, which hinder the consistent implementation of interactive numeracy activities. Finally, insufficient training in designing developmentally appropriate manipulative-based tasks limits teachers’ ability to maximize the benefits of these approaches.
Pursuing this study is necessary to provide empirical evidence on the impact of manipulative-based and real-life counting experiences on early numeracy development. Understanding how these strategies influence kindergarten learners’ numeracy sense can guide teachers in designing engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons. The findings will inform instructional planning, resource allocation, and professional development, ultimately aiming to strengthen mathematical foundations and promote positive attitudes toward mathematics from an early age.
