THROUGH VLOG DIARIES

ABSTRACT

This study sought to explore the effectiveness of making a video diary as an intervention in enhancing speaking skills of the Senior High School learners of Buenavista High School in Pura, Tarlac during the S.Y. 2018-2019. The four areas of speaking skills such as pronunciation, syntax, fluency, and vocabulary were measured before and after the intervention.

It made use of the pre-experimental method of research using one group pretest posttest design. The pre-and post-evaluation was administered by the researcher and his two inter-raters.

The mean was used to analyze the performance of the learners before and after making vlog diaries. With the overall mean of 8.725 the result revealed that the speaking skills level of the learners is at intermediate level during the pre-evaluation. With the overall mean of 14.125 the result revealed that the speaking level of the learners is advanced after the intervention.

Paired-sample T-test formula was used to measure the significant difference between the ratings during pre-and post-evaluation. The computed t-test value of 17.662 is higher than the critical value of 2.004 which signifies a significant difference between the learners’ speaking skills level during the pre-and post-evaluation. And, the computed t-test value of 17.662 which is greater than the critical value of 1.673 which revealed that there is a significant improvement with the performance among the learners during the pre-and post-evaluation.

I. Introduction

The aid of technology in teaching is no longer a new thing. But, with its continuous developments over decades it is getting more and more significant in the teaching-learning process even in the teaching of speaking. According to Dudeney and Hockly (2001), technology offers avenue for practicing language and assessing performance.

One of the trending activities today is making a video diary and/or making a vlog if it is uploaded in the web. This material contains video content which is about specific topic that the creator would like to discuss or show to his audience.

Vlog or video diary is defines as the video component that provides the series of broadcasts which is allowing everyone to create video content and considers it as a documentary and as a vehicle for communication (Maulidah, 2017).

This study explored the effectiveness of making a video diary as an intervention in enhancing speaking skills of the Senior High School students of Buenavista High School in Pura, Tarlac. Four areas of speaking skills such as vocabulary, syntax, pronunciation and fluency this study would like to enhance to using the intervention.

The learners made self-introduction, introduction of people, how-to demonstration and share experience to the digital audience which was uploaded on a private Facebook page which is managed by the researcher.

II. Methodology

The learners undergone a pre-evaluation to be administered by the researcher with the help of two inter raters who are also teachers of English of Buenavista High School. After determining their speaking skills level, the participants were given topics to discuss or to talk about in their vlogs which is about 3-5 minutes long and submit them weekly to the researcher, list of tasks is appended in this paper. After the series of vlogging tasks, the learners undergone post-evaluation to find out if there is a significant difference and improvement among the result.
