FROM GAPS TO GAINS: IMPLEMENTING PROJECT E-MATH ARAL TO IMPROVE MATHEMATICS MASTERY OF

GRADE 3 PUPILS AT LEMERY PILOT

ABSTRACT

This action research, titled “From Gaps to Gains: Implementing Project e-Math ARAL (Electronic Mathematics through Accessible, Responsive, and Adaptive Learning),” was conducted at Lemery Pilot Elementary School during School Year 2025–2026. It aimed to determine the effectiveness of an ICT-based innovation in improving the mathematics mastery and engagement of Grade 3 learners who struggled with competencies under Measurement and Geometry (Quarter 1) and Number and Algebra (Quarter 2), as identified in the Rapid Mathematics Assessment (RMA).

The study employed a classroom-based action research design composed of three phases: pre-implementation, implementation, and post-implementation. A total of 312 Grade 3 learners participated, selected through purposive sampling based on their RMA results. The intervention utilized digital worksheets, interactive flashcards, and gamified quizzes developed under Project e-Math ARAL. Data were gathered through pre-tests and post-tests, classroom observations, learner feedback, and teacher reflections. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. Triangulation was applied to ensure the reliability and validity of the results.

Findings revealed that before the intervention, most learners (79%) were under the Emerging proficiency levels. During the implementation of Project e-Math ARAL, learners demonstrated substantial improvement, reflected in a 22.4% overall increase in mathematics mastery. Engagement ratings averaged 3.53 (“Highly Engaged”), signifying high participation, motivation, and enjoyment in learning mathematics through ICT-based tools.

The study concludes that Project e-Math ARAL is an effective ICT-based intervention that enhances mathematics mastery, promotes engagement, and fosters independent learning. It is recommended that teachers integrate this innovation into regular instruction, administrators provide ICT support and training, and future researchers explore similar approaches across other grade levels and subject areas.

I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

The Philippine education system continues to face the challenge of addressing learning gaps that hinder pupils’ mastery of fundamental skills, particularly in mathematics. Various factors such as disrupted learning, socioeconomic conditions, and limited access to quality instructional resources contribute to these difficulties. When foundational competencies are not mastered at the lower grades, learners often encounter greater struggles in succeeding grade levels, affecting their overall numeracy development and confidence in problem-solving.

At Lemery Pilot Elementary School, the results of the Rapid Mathematics Assessment (RMA) revealed that many Grade 3 learners performed below the expected level in key areas of the curriculum. In particular, competencies under Measurement and Geometry (Quarter 1) and Number and Algebra (Quarter 2) were identified as least mastered. These learning gaps, if left unaddressed, may hinder pupils from building a strong mathematical foundation needed for more complex concepts in higher grade levels.

In today’s digital age, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) offers innovative opportunities to support teaching and learning. ICT-based resources such as digital worksheets, interactive flashcards, and gamified quizzes make abstract mathematical concepts more engaging, accessible, and adaptive to the diverse needs of learners. Such tools provide immediate feedback, encourage active participation, and foster independent learning — all of which are crucial in strengthening numeracy skills.

Recognizing this need, the researcher conceptualized Project e-Math ARAL (Electronic Mathematics Through Accessible, Responsive, and Adaptive Learning). This project is an ICT-based innovation designed specifically to address the least mastered skills identified in the RMA. Through scaffolded digital materials and interactive activities, Project e-Math ARAL seeks to bridge existing learning gaps, reinforce key competencies, and ultimately improve the mathematics mastery of Grade 3 pupils at Lemery Pilot Elementary School.
