FOSTERING ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AT

CALACA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

DELROSE I. BARREDO

The study focused on examining the relationship between the science academic performance, ecological consciousness and pro-environmental behavior among public senior high school learners in Calaca City, Batangas with a proposed sample size of 273 respondents drawn from Calaca Senior High School. This study employed a descriptive-correlational research design, as it provides a systematic approach to examining the relationships among science academic performance, ecological consciousness, and pro-environmental behavior among senior high school students. The researcher employed a self-constructed questionnaire to measure the respondents’ extent of ecological consciousness and the frequency of their pro-environmental behaviors. Respondents were chosen through stratified random sampling. The statistical tools that were utilized were frequency, mean, Pearson-r Moment of Correlation, and ranking.

Findings revealed that the science academic performance among senior high school students was at an overall mean final grade of 90.48. The learners have a very great extent of ecological consciousness across all dimensions, as well as in engaging pro-environmental behaviors. Statistical analysis indicated that all variables are positively and significantly correlated at a highly significant level. Specifically, Science Academic Performance has a weak but statistically significant positive correlation with Ecological Consciousness, same with Science Academic Performance that also has a weak but statistically positive correlation with Pro-Environmental Behavior. The strongest relationship observed is between Ecological Consciousness and Pro-Environmental Behavior. It was also discovered that the school’s environmental initiatives are always observed but needs improvement to align with Environmental Education.

Based on the findings observed, the Environmental Instructional Module was proposed to foster environmental education to public senior high school students.
