HIGH SCHOOL

MARIEL C. COLOMA

This study was conducted to determine the listening competency of junior high school students in Alitagtag National High School. Employing descriptive research design, the study involved 168 junior high school students as respondents. Data was collected and analyzed using statistical methods such as percentage, mean, standard deviation and independent t-test to determine the extent who among the students shows good academic performance when it comes to their listening competency. This research aimed to provide insights into the current difficulties that junior high school students are experiencing and the possible enhancement plan the school may employ.

The findings revealed that majority of the respondents were aged 13 years old and below, with an almost equal number of male and female participants, and a fair distribution across all grade levels and both active listening and comprehension, which measure the students' listening proficiency, received favorable ratings. It was revealed that there is no significant difference in students’ listening competency when grouped according to sex. However, there is a significant difference when grouped according to age and grade level. Students also agreed that the school supports their listening development through teacher seminars and interactive activities. Lastly, the most common challenge faced by the students in improving their listening competency is the lack of a conducive learning environment, poor retention and inside and outside distractions.

This study highlighted the proposed listening enhancement plan entitled L.E.A.P. Forward-Listening Enhancement and Advancement Program which explores the effectiveness of specific listening enhancement strategies, such as the use of audio-visual aids or interactive listening modules, and how these interventions affect students’ listening competency over time.
